All about MAME, my Suzuki M109, and other trivia
I’ve started updating my site’s M109 modification pages with “How To” instructions. These are mostly illustrated with images from the Suzuki parts catalog that I’ve colorized. Visit the site for a look-see.
I got a new program from the new iPhone Applications store called “Mr. Shuffle”–it’s sort of a digital Mr Potato Head… and my daughter really likes it. She likes choosing the face parts (eyes, noes, mouth, etc.) but she especially likes deleting them (you touch the item and then touch a little trash can). It’s pretty cute

I just installed Leopard on my PowerBook.
The install was flawless and I got back some functionality that I’d screwed up in fritzing around with things that I wasn’t supposed to (like the Flash plugin I killed by uninstalling Flash–not the player, but the full product). Overall I like the new functionality, look, and the way that the best of the old has been kept.
I’m especially fond of the new dock features–the “fan” view of folders available in the new dock is great for organizing “like” programs. For instance, instead of having CorelDRAW, PhotoPaint, and Trace as individual dock items, I now have a dock “folder” that’s a folder image with the Corel logo superimposed that contains these program’s icons. So all my graphics programs are in the dock, but only take up a single space. Sweet.
Well–now that I’ve had it a few weeks, I have to say that the iPhone is pretty nifty. My recently purchased RAZR went for a swim a few weeks ago, so a new phone was called for. With the price drop, and hacked applications coming out, the iPhone seemed like a good choice. So far it has been cool.
For her birthday, I bought my wife a 17″ MacBook Pro. It’s a really nice machine, nicer than my 13″ PowerBook. I am really impressed by the design–the lighted keyboard is very nice, and the overall quailty seems, well… very Apple-like. With the Core Duo2 processor and 17″ wide-format screen, it makes a good desktop replacement, let alone replacement for her aging Dell laptop.

The only downsides are heat and the size. While it’s nice sitting on the desk, 17″ isn’t really a “laptop” size. And that powerful Core Duo2 processor gets REALLY hot (another non-laptop feature). But we’re really please with it overall.
After 12 years without a television, my wife and I decided to spend some of my bonus this year on an LCD TV for the living room. We still won’t have cable, but we do watch a lot of movies and the projector we originally bought to watch them on hasn’t turned out to be as convenient as we’d hoped. So our new 37″ Sharp LCD TV will be delivered on Tuesday. (more…)
My mini wouldn’t restart after an update :-( The limited troubleshooting info available on the Web wasn’t any help–I got the power light, but no fan or chime. Try diagnosing that!
Luckily, since it’s still under warranty, the geniuses at the genius bar were able to fix it at no charge. We’re looking forward to getting it hooked up to our TV later this week or early next week.
This morning I fired up my Intel-based Mac Mini and launched Command and Conquer to see how well it fared under Rosetta. It turns out that it runs, but on my Mac Mini Core Solo, it’s pretty slow. (more…)
I’ve read a lot of online reviews of the new Intel-powered Macs, but most of them have focused on the Core Duo models. I recently ordered a Core Solo Mac Mini to use as my living room PC. I chose the Solo because I didn’t think I’d need the horsepower of the Duo for what I’m doing. (more…)
